The short answer
Several free, open-source tools now let Claude or ChatGPT check your website’s SEO and suggest fixes. The one we would start with, Claude SEO, installs with three commands inside Claude Code and returns a ranked list of fixes for any address you give it. ‘Free’ means the software: you still need the AI plan it runs on, and some tools need paid data or accounts for their extra features. Run them on your own website, and read every change before it goes live.
Why it is worth fixing
An SEO audit used to mean a specialist tool or an agency. These tools put the same kind of checklist into an assistant you may already pay for, and some also check whether AI search tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity can read your pages. For an agency whose sector and job pages bring in candidates and clients, that is worth an afternoon. The checks are only as good as the evidence they can see, though, and some of these projects are young.
Step by step
Set two rules before you start
Run these tools only on a website you own or have written permission to check. And if a tool offers to change your site’s code, read every change before it goes live, or ask whoever looks after your site to do it.
Install Claude SEO
You need Claude Code installed. Inside it, run three commands in order: “/plugin marketplace add AgriciDaniel/claude-seo”, then “/plugin install claude-seo@agricidaniel-claude-seo”, then “/seo setup”. The last one prepares its own Python environment and a background browser without touching the rest of your computer.
Run your first audit
Type “/seo audit” followed by your website address. Specialist agents check technical SEO, content, structured data, speed, AI search and more, then sort what they find into an action plan, most important first. To check one page before it goes live, use “/seo page” instead. The maker warns that a full audit uses more of your Claude plan than a single-page check.
For fixes as well as findings, try fire-your-seo-agency
This Claude Code skill installs with the two plugin commands on its GitHub page. It reads your site the way a search crawler does, scores it for Google and for AI answer engines, fixes what it can, such as sitemaps, meta tags and structured data, and schedules a re-check. The fixes are code edits, so it suits sites whose files Claude Code can reach. Ignore its lane for Naver, the Korean search engine.
Give your assistant your real Search Console numbers
Ian Nuttall’s free tool, called seo, connects Claude Code, Codex and other assistants to your own Google Search Console data, so you can ask why clicks dropped and get an answer from your numbers. In Claude Code, run “claude mcp add --transport http seoskill https://seoskill.dev/mcp”, then sign in with Google. It runs through a hosted service, seoskill.dev, so read its privacy policy first. Keyword research needs your own paid DataForSEO or Ahrefs key.
Using ChatGPT? Try SEO-pro
The maker of Claude SEO also offers SEO-pro, an independent ChatGPT plugin that OpenAI did not make or endorse. Download the plugin ZIP from the downloads folder of the chatgpt-seo repository, then in ChatGPT open Plugins, choose Add, then Upload plugin archive. Paste a page address and you get a ranked list of fixes with the evidence for each. It is new and lighter than Claude SEO, installs no crawler and does no ongoing monitoring, and the upload option depends on your ChatGPT account.
Need keyword data? Look at OpenSEO
OpenSEO is an open-source alternative to Semrush and Ahrefs, for keyword research, rank tracking, backlinks and site audits, and it works with Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants. The software is free; the SEO data is not. Host it yourself and you pay DataForSEO for each request with your own key. The hosted version at openseo.so needs a monthly subscription after a small free trial, and its makers say it adds a margin to each data request.
Checklist
- The site you check is your own, or you have written permission
- You know which AI plan each tool runs on, and that full audits use more of it
- You know which features need a paid key or account before you switch them on
- Each tool came from its maker’s own GitHub page
- Every code change is read before it goes live
- Someone owns each fix on the list, starting at the top
When it is worth getting help
If your site is small and you are comfortable in Claude Code or ChatGPT, these tools will give you a useful fix list. It is worth getting help when the fixes need changes to your site’s code or templates that nobody in-house can make, or when you want to know how your agency comes across when people ask an AI assistant about agencies like yours.
Rec Int. is building an AI-visibility check for recruitment agencies; you can read what it will cover on our AI visibility page.
Questions people ask
Are these tools really free?
The software is. Most of them run inside an AI plan you pay for, several have optional features that need paid data or accounts, and OpenSEO’s hosted version is a monthly subscription.
Will an AI audit replace an SEO specialist?
It will find common technical and content problems and explain them. Deciding which fixes matter for your market, and writing pages people want to read, still needs a person.
